The LSU School of Public Health provides MSW students with the opportunity to enhance their social work education through a dual-degree program in public health. Students can choose between two specialized tracks: the One Health online track, which explores the connections between human, animal, and environmental health, or the in-person track focused on Community Health Science & Policy, emphasizing public health leadership and policy development. Both tracks require the same number of additional credits to earn the MPH degree, equipping students with the interdisciplinary skills needed to address complex health challenges in diverse communities.
Online One Health Track
The One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health,
making it highly valuable for Master of Social Work (MSW) students interested in addressing
public health challenges on a broader scale. Social workers often encounter issues
such as environmental justice, infectious disease prevention, disaster response, and
community health disparities, all of which are influenced by the One Health framework.
By integrating this perspective into their practice, MSW students can develop a more
comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting public well-being. The One Health
dual-degree track is taught entirely online, offering flexibility for students to complete their MPH coursework while balancing
their social work studies and professional commitments. This convenient format allows
MSW students to expand their expertise in public health without needing to relocate
or disrupt their current work or field placements.
In Person Track
The in-person dual-degree program for MSW students at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans offers a unique opportunity to earn an MPH in Community Health Science & Policy while engaging directly with faculty, public health professionals, and community organizations. Studying on campus allows students to participate in hands-on learning experiences, networking opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaborations that enhance their understanding of public health policy, program development, and community engagement. Being in New Orleans—a city with a rich and complex public health landscape—provides students with firsthand exposure to urban health challenges, social determinants of health, and innovative public health initiatives. This immersive experience prepares graduates to take on leadership roles in community health, policy advocacy, and social service organizations, equipping them with the practical skills and professional connections needed to make a lasting impact.
How to Apply for Either Track
Application Requirements:
- Acceptance by the LSU School of Social Work
- The deadline to apply to the LSU School of Public Health for the dual degree program is May 1
- MPH application form, including:
- Signed Release of Admissions Records from LSU School of Social Work OR Veterinary Medicine
- Statement stating “Why You Wish to Pursue an MPH Degree”
- Copy of Letter of Acceptance from the LSU School of Social Work
All pieces must be submitted prior to May 1 on the LSU School of Public Health’s Application Portal
