Exciting News from the Community Health Sciences & Policy Program!

MPH in Epidemiology in Baton Rouge

The Community Health Sciences and Policy program at the LSU School of Public Health is expanding access to public health education with a new Off-Campus Instructional Site (OCIS) in Baton Rouge! Launching for Fall 2026, this site will provide students with greater opportunities to advance their public health training while remaining on the LSU Baton Rouge campus.

Beginning in Fall 2025, the OCIS will welcome students into the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Community Health Sciences and Policy, equipping future public health leaders with the skills to address critical health challenges.

The MPH program in Community Health Science and Policy (CHSP) prepares students for jobs in public health leadership such as program or project managers, community advocates in government and non-governmental agencies. Students can also explore careers as policy analysts, evaluation scientists, community change facilitators, health educators, health promotion specialists, health communications specialists, health information system managers, medical and health services managers, prevention coordinators, public health advisors, quality management coordinators, and research assistants. Students will acquire skills in community engagement, policy analysis, risk and protective factor assessment, communication, intervention evaluation, and health impact assessment.

CHSP electives include behavioral theory application; chronic disease prevention and management; community-based participatory programming; diffusion methodologies; physical activity; obesity; geriatrics ; infectious disease prevention; maternal and child health programming; mental health promotion in populations; quantitative and quality research methods; rural health access; and evaluation survey design.

CHSP Competencies for MPH Degree
  1. Apply behavioral health theories to community health approaches.
  2. Assess the impact of community-based intervention on public health outcomes.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in planning and evaluating ethical and culturally aligned public health programs/interventions.
  4. Apply management practices to decision-making in public health.
  5. Develop, analyze, and evaluate policies for improving health programming.
  6. Evaluate potential solutions to health issues affecting individuals and populations, including health disparities, through a socio-ecological lens.
