LSUHealthNO Public Health & Baby Cakes Honor Cancer Survivors, Raise Cancer Awareness - Public Health
August 21, 2017
LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health faculty and staff participated in the
New Orleans Baby Cakes’ Cancer Awareness Night on Friday, August 4, 2017, at the Shrine
on Airline. The night celebrated cancer survivors, including one of LSU Health’s own,
Carl Kluttz, who works at the School of Public Health and threw the first pitch. The
evening helped to increase the number of cancer survivors by raising awareness of
risk factors, the importance of screening tests and early detection, as well as educating
people about what they can do to help prevent cancer.
Contributions of LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health faculty and staff included a giant, inflatable colon, which people walked through to learn about colon cancer and screening, and staff sharedinformation and answered questions about breast and cervical cancer early detection and screening services.
As part of its service mission, LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health developed
and operates Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs. Working with partners
around the state, programs and projects include the Louisiana Breast and Cervical
Health Program, the Louisiana Colorectal Health Project, the Gulf States Young Breast
Cancer Survivor Network/Survive Dat Program, HPV Studies, Survivorship Plans, and
the Louisiana Healthy Communities Coalition.
