LDH and Fire Departments Partner with LSU Health SPH to Launch Firefighter Cancer & Screening Tracking Program
March 31, 2026
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has established a new collaborative agreement
with the LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health to create a statewide Firefighter
Cancer and Screening Registry. Led by Principal Investigators Dr. Qingzhao Yu and
Dr. Xiaocheng Wu, this initiative brings together the School’s Research, Evaluation,
Analysis, and Design (READ) Center, the Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR), and Fire Departments
across Louisiana to establish and maintain a comprehensive system for tracking cancer
incidence, use of cancer screening services, and occupational exposures among firefighters.
This partnership represents a significant advancement in collaborative public health
efforts to understand, prevent, and improve cancer outcomes in a high-exposure profession.
The Firefighter Cancer and Screening Tracking Program is expected to play a transformative
role in improving firefighter well-being by supporting early detection, strengthening
workplace safety practices, and informing evidence-based policies statewide. In addition,
the rich, high-quality data generated through this effort will support researchers
studying exposure-related cancers and developing targeted prevention strategies. This
collaboration will reinforce Louisiana’s commitment to safeguarding its first responders
and advancing cancer research that benefits communities across the state.
