Alpha Psi Chapter

Delta Omega is the public health honor society. The first chapter was founded in 1924 at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.  Today, over 100 chapters exist across the United States and in Puerto Rico.

The National Council includes Executive Committee and representatives from each chapter. The Council hosts a Zoom meeting each fall for all chapter administrators to share about upcoming events and to debrief on activities that have passed.  Financial and other organizational matters are also on the agenda.

Delta Omega is present and active during the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. The Delta Omega Poster Session features selected posters by public health students submitted each spring by their respective chapters.  At the annual Delta Omega reception, the student authors are recognized.  In addition, a Delta Omega member is awarded the Innovative Curriculum Award, recognizing for their contribution to public health curriculum. The Chapter of the Year award is also presented to a chapter who has conducted outreach and has reported on their lessons learned.

Over the past century, public health has broadened significantly. While it is still seriously concerned with problems of environmental sanitation and communicable disease control, public health has come to embrace all aspects of health and disease in populations. These include the planning, organization, and support of health promotion, disease prevention, and medical care. Basic to modern public health are the social sciences as well as the natural sciences–both in the United States and internationally.

MEMBERSHIP

Each year, the School of Public  induction of new members is conducted.  The chapter may elect new members from four groups according to national standards.

NUMBER OF INDUCTEES: Dependent on graduation class size

ELIGIBILITY: Students are graduating with a graduate degree from the LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health in spring semester or has graduated in the summer or fall semesters immediately preceding

CRITERIA: Academic conduct/excellence,;demonstrated contribution to Public Health in research and practice; and leadership; plus intended career path

INDUCTION: Students are inducted at the annual SPH Student Awards Ceremony in May.

CATEGORY: LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health Undergraduate Students

SELECTION: Dependent on graduation class size

ELIIGIBILITY: Students 

CRITERIA: Academic conduct/excellence; demonstrated contribution to Public Health in research and practice; plus intended career path.

INDUCTION: Graduating students are inducted at the annual SPH Student Awards Ceremony in May.

CATEGORY: LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health Alumni

(Selection  Limit: 2/year)

NOMINATIONS: Open to an invidividual who graduated from one of our school's graduate degree programs: MPH (inclusive of dual degrees); MS and PhD.

ELIGIBILITY/CRITERIA: ".......graduates of the local school of public health whose work in the practice of public health would serve as a model for future graduates of the school" [National Delta Omega Consitution and By-laws)

CATEGORY: LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health Faculty

CRITERIA: Person possessing exceptional qualifications, who have attained meritorious distinction in the field of public health.

 

Nominee's resume/CV and other supporting documentation are submitted for review by chapter members.  Members may provide additional information.  Vote by private ballot follows.

 

Membership in Delta Omega reflects the dedication of an individual to quality work in the  field of public health and to the protection and advancement of the health of all people.
