Screen Up partners with primary care clinics across Louisiana to increase cancer screening rates through evidence-based, tailored quality improvement strategies. We strengthen clinical workflows, enhance the adoption and fidelity of screening protocols, and address patient and system barriers to ensure equitable, effective cancer prevention and early detection.

Why does it matter?
Louisiana has some of the highest death rates in America for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. These cancers often do not show warning signs. Screening is the best way to prevent and detect these cancers early, when they are most easily treated. Despite this, screening rates in Louisiana are low.
Screen Up Overview
Screen Up is a statewide program working to help more Louisianans get screened for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer. Our goal is simple: to make cancer screenings easier to access in every community across the state. We partner with primary care clinics to strengthen the systems and workflow that support cancer screening. Using national guidelines and proven, evidence-based approaches, our team helps clinics identify what works, make necessary improvements, and close care gaps.
Screen Up focuses on clinics that serve communities most affected by late-stage cancer and those with high numbers of Medicaid or uninsured patients. Each participating clinic is matched with a trained practice coach from LSU Health New Orleans who works alongside clinic staff to improve everyday processes that help patients get screened on time.
Screen Up offers support for clinics to implement the following interventions, proven to increase screening rates:
- Provider assessment and feedback
- Provider reminders
- Patient reminders
- Reducing structural barriers to accessing services
- Patient navigation
Partner clinics receive:
A grant to support the implementation of interventions
- A practice facilitator to guide you through the process of implementing interventions
- Technical assistance for collecting and using data and reporting
- Professional development, training, and continuing education opportunities
- Promotion of success and services
