Service: Strengthening Communities Through Public Health

At the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Public Health, service is at the heart of our mission. We are committed to translating research into action and ensuring that our expertise directly benefits the communities we serve—here in New Orleans, across Louisiana, and beyond.

Through innovative programs and partnerships, our faculty, staff, and students address urgent health needs, promote equity, and create sustainable solutions that improve lives. Our service initiatives span a wide range of public health issues and include:

  • READ Center (Research, Education, and Advocacy for Diversity)
  • Institute for Public Health Justice
  • jLPHA (Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association)
  • Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs (LCP)
  • South Central AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC)
  • Tobacco Control Initiative

Each of these programs reflects our commitment to public service, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement. Together, they advance health equity, reduce disparities, and address critical challenges such as cancer prevention, tobacco use, HIV/AIDS education, and social justice in health policy.

Service at LSUHSC School of Public Health is also a cornerstone of student learning. By engaging directly with our programs, students gain hands-on experience in real-world public health practice—preparing them to lead and innovate in their future careers.

Our goal is simple yet powerful: to leverage research, education, and service to strengthen the health of our communities and build a healthier, more just Louisiana.
