Welcome to Research Interest Group
Environmental Health and Climate Change
Facilitator: Scott Hemmerling - Associate Professor, EHCS
The Environmental Health and Climate Change Research Interest Group promotes interdisciplinary research on the complex relationship between climate change,
environmental conditions, and human health. The group examines how a changing climate
alters environmental hazards and exposures and exacerbates public health risks across
populations and communities. Areas of interest include the health risks associated
with flooding and tropical weather events, heat exposure and heat-related illness,
changing patterns of water- and vector-borne diseases, and the public health impacts
of coastal environmental change. Additional research examines how climate-driven environmental
hazards, including extreme weather events, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion,
affect water quality and sanitation and alter exposures to environmental contaminants.
The group brings together researchers with diverse disciplinary perspectives, methods,
and areas of expertise to better understand how climate-driven health risks emerge
through interactions among environmental, biological, social, and infrastructural
systems. By connecting complementary expertise, members seek to identify emerging
research needs, develop new research partnerships and projects, and generate knowledge
that strengthens public health surveillance, preparedness, adaptation, and resilience
in a changing climate.
