James H. DiazJames H Diaz

A native of New Orleans, Dr. Diaz earned several degrees from Tulane, including Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Health Administration, Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Travel Health, Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and Doctor of Public Health. Dr. Diaz is board-certified in anesthesiology, critical care medicine, pain management, general preventive medicine and public health, occupational/environmental medicine, and medical toxicology. Dr. Diaz has published over 250 original articles and chapters in scientific journals and textbooks. He has written 2 textbooks in pediatric anesthesiology, 2 textbooks in medical toxicology, and 3 textbooks in tropical medicine. His latest text, Tickborne Infectious Diseases and Non-Infectious Conditions, is now in production. For over 20 years and through 4 editions, Dr. Diaz contributed 6 chapters on ectoparasitic infections to Mandell’s Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Diaz served as Professor of Public Health and Program Director of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at LSUHSC for over 20 years. He also held appointments in the School of Graduate Studies and in the School of Medicine as Professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine and Family Medicine. Dr. Diaz served as a Board Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Diaz also served as President of the New Orleans Anesthesia Society and the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists. He is a member of Delta Omega, the national public health honor society. In 2009, Dr. Diaz accepted the Allen A. Copping Award for Excellence in Teaching from LSUHSC. In 2011, Dr. Diaz was awarded membership in the New Orleans Anesthesia Society Hall of Fame. Since 2015, Dr. Diaz has served as a Medical Examiner for the US Department of Justice and remains in the consultant practice of occupational/environmental medicine and medical toxicology.

Crystal N JohnsonCrystal N Johnson

Dr. Crystal N. Johnson is an associate professor in the LSU Department of Environmental Sciences in the College of the Coast and Environment. She earned her bachelor's degree in cell and molecular biology at Tulane University in 1997 and her Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2004. As an undergraduate researcher at Tulane University, she studied phytohormones and quickly fell in love with lab research. As a doctoral student she studied antibiotic resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae. As a postdoc at the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, she fell in love with vibrios and other autochthonous microbes and how they interact with their surrounding environments. She now focuses on Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus, and other microbes that occur naturally on the coast of Louisiana and beyond. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Louisiana Sea Grant, and the Louisiana Board of Regents. She loves birding.
