Physical Activity and Park Conditions in New Orleans Pre and Post-Hurricane Katrina

Funded by the Active Living Research Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this study documented and compared the physical activity behaviors and park conditions in New Orleans at four time periods: pre-Katrina (Spring 2005), post-Katrina 1 (Spring 2006), post-Katrina 2 (Fall 2006), and post-Katrina 3 (Spring 2007). Park conditions were assessed using the BRAT-DO in 5 parks, park user characteristics were assessed using surveys in 3 parks, and physical activity behavior were assessed using SOPARC in 2 parks.

Parks and Physical Activity in Post-Katrina New Orleans

Funded by the CDC, this study documented park conditions and physical activity behaviors in post-Katrina New Orleans in 40 parks.  The first assessment occurred approximately one year after Hurricane Katrina (Summer 2006), the second assessment occured two years after Hurricane Katrina (Summer 2007), and the third and final assessment occurred three years after Hurricane Katrina (Summer 2008).  Park conditions using the BRAT-DO and park user characteristics using surveys were assessed at all time points.  Physical activity behavior using SOPARC was assessed at the second and third time points.
