LSU SRP Continues to Work with Community on Air Quality and Health: Update for Colfax, Louisiana

The Louisiana State University Superfund Research Program (LSU SRP) is conducting research on the effects of air pollution in Colfax, Louisiana. On June 29, 2023, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality prohibited the facility from open burning and open detonation of explosive and hazardous materials. This decision comes after nearly 40 years of the facility’s practice, and the prohibition will take effect 180 days after the notice. Since 2020, Dr. Jennifer Richmond-Bryant has led a team at LSU SRP studying air pollution in Colfax. They work closely with Dr. Margaret Reams’ LSU SRP Community Engagement Core to promote community participation and collect air, dust, urine, and toenail samples to study health impacts.
