MD-MPH Program

To advance the public's health and well-being through education, research & service
with a focus on issues affecting Louisiana

A joint MD-MPH program is offered between the LSUHSC School of Medicine and the LSUHSC School of Public Health. A prospective student wishing to enroll in both the MD and MPH programs should apply concurrently to both schools.* If accepted to both the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health, a student may commit to the combined MD-MPH program. The MD-MPH student follows the schedule outlined below:

  • Summer prior to the first year of medical school studies: take EPID 6210, BIOS 6100, and Core Course in your concentration
  • Fall – Spring of first year: take first year of medical school courses;
  • Summer between Years 1 and 2 of medical studies: take remaining two Core Courses
  • Fall – Spring of second year: take second year of medical school courses;
  • Summer following Year 2 of medical studies: take USMLE Step 1, take MPH practice experience
  • Fall – Spring of third year: take 2 semesters off from medical studies while taking full-time MPH coursework, graduate with an MPH in Spring;
  • Return to the School of Medicine to complete the final two clinical years of medical studies and graduate with an MD at the end of the fifth year.

At no time during medical studies will the student be allowed to take concurrent MPH courses. All MPH courses must be completed in the two summer semesters designated above and the 12-month period prior to commencing clinical studies in the School of Medicine.

* If a student is already enrolled in the MPH program, s/he must complete the MPH requirements prior to entry into the Medical School.
