What is Behavioral & Community Health Sciences?
The Behavioral and Community Health Sciences are concerned with promoting wellness,
preventing disease and improving the quality of life in at-risk communities and populations.
The BCHS program advocates the use of a socio-ecological approach to identifying and
understanding the social, cultural and bio-behavioral determinants affecting health. The diverse
backgrounds of BCHS faculty afford students a broad range of applied public health experiences
designing, implementing and evaluating interventions to address challenging public health
issues such as childhood obesity, HIV/ AIDS, tobacco use, and cancer control and prevention.
The BCHS program of study for the master of public health consists of 46 credit hours in which
students complete coursework, research, practice experience and a capstone project.
